Chairman’s & CEO’s Message
DR GAO Teng
CEO, MRDI

With the strong support of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, MRDI, as a neutral public R&D platform, is committed to becoming a trusted strategic partner for the microelectronics industry.
We will leverage Hong Kong's unique advantages to attract global talent and, with a proactive and open attitude, share our research outcomes with industry, academia and research institutions through flexible business cooperation models and advanced intellectual property management practices. This will enhance technology transfer and industrial upgrading, jointly driving the development of innovative technologies. We firmly believe that these efforts will help Hong Kong attract more outstanding talent, strengthen our position in the global innovation and technology sector, and bring new momentum for economic growth.
At this stage, we will focus on supporting the technology direction of the third-generation semiconductor, which has significant market potential. Both Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN) are at critical stages of technology development and application penetration, emerging prominently in essential fields such as new energy vehicles, data centres, and renewable energy. The widespread application of these technologies will effectively reduce global energy demand and lower carbon emissions.
As a key link in the innovation process of the microelectronics industry that connects innovative research with mass production, pilot lines are irreplaceable. However, the high investment and maintenance costs pose challenges for most companies. Therefore, with the support of the HKSAR Government, we are constructing two pilot lines at the Yuen Long Innovation Park focused on third-generation semiconductor technology (one for SiC and one for GaN) to meet the pilot production needs of businesses and universities, facilitating the commercialisation and productisation of research outcomes.
As an independent public research institution, we are devoted to be a collaborative partner for industry, universities, and research institutions. We aim for fostering knowledge sharing, technological advancement, and industrial development through the broadest cooperation. MRDI will work closely with universities to implement various training and educational programmes to cultivate the urgently needed microelectronics talent for the industry, laying a solid foundation for sustainable development.
MRDI is excited to collaborate with partners to tackle future challenges and seize opportunities. Together, we aim to advance the sustainable development of the microelectronics industry and create a brighter future.
