Facilities & Support for Microelectronics

The objective of the HKSAR Government’s establishment of the MRDI is to promote microelectronics development in Hong Kong, with a view to developing it as one of the leading institutions for supporting microelectronics development in the Asia-Pacific region.

Driving R&D in Microelectronics

Pioneer in the R&D of Third-Generation Semiconductors

MRDI initially focuses on supporting third-generation semiconductors, including Silicon Carbide and Gallium Nitride, operate the pilot line equipment which serves as a bridge between innovative research and mass production and provides support for R&D and innovative design for industrial production.

Driving Industrial Competitiveness through R&D

Focus on R&D to help the industry improve its competitiveness, meet the needs of Hong Kong and GBA’s economic development, develop technological innovation, and expand industrial application.

Collaborative Hub for I&T Ecosystem

Provide a common platform to pool together top-notch researchers from universities, R&D centres and the industry to achieve “collaboration among the Government, industry, academia and research institutes”, so as to enhance the I&T ecosystem in Hong Kong.

In addition, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has established various funding support programmes such as the Innovation and Technology Fund to accelerate the development of microelectronics-related enterprises. Hong Kong's private financing system, including private equity firms, venture capital companies and family offices also actively supports startups.

Strategic Technological Roadmapping with Industry

Work closely with the industry to formulate the major long-term technological development road map and strategies of the MRDI in order to overcome key technical hurdles in commercial application.

Leading with Facilities and Support

The MRDI will also play a leading role in strengthening collaboration with the industry, academia and research sectors, expediting the “1 to N” transformation of scientific research outcomes, promoting technological innovation, and assisting the industry in enhancing efficiency as well as achieving upgrading and transformation.
